Understanding the Main Types of Commercial Refrigeration Units

There are approximately six types of commercial refrigeration units, each designed to meet specific storage or display requirements.

Some commercial refrigeration units prioritize product display, others focus on storage, and some are designed for easy access. Here is a brief overview:

1. Upright Display Refrigerators

Upright display refrigerators are the most common type of commercial refrigeration.

Typically tall and equipped with glass doors, they are primarily used to refrigerate and showcase items such as beverages, dairy products, or ready-to-eat snacks.

Their vertical design helps businesses save floor space while effectively presenting products to customers.

These units are categorized by their storage capacity (in cubic feet) and the number of doors-ranging from single-door models to three-door units (which can offer a capacity of over 60 cubic feet).

2. Countertop Refrigerators

Countertop display refrigerators are compact, stylish units designed to sit on top of a counter.

They are ideal for storing smaller items like desserts, bottled drinks, or sandwiches. These units are most frequently found in cafes and bakeries where space is limited.

Deli-style display cases are perhaps the most common type of countertop refrigerator, appearing especially often in convenience store chains.

3. Under-Counter Refrigerators

Under-counter refrigeration units are cleverly designed to fit neatly beneath a work counter, providing easy access to items without occupying additional floor space.

They are most commonly used in settings like bars or kitchens, where quick access to products is essential.

4. Open-Air Refrigerators

Open-air refrigeration units are specialized display cases that lack doors. Often used in high-traffic areas or convenience stores, they are particularly effective at encouraging impulse purchases. Their design allows customers to quickly and easily grab products.

5. Horizontal/Display Freezers

Commercial display freezers are used for storing frozen goods, such as ice cream or pre-packaged frozen foods. Their horizontal design ensures high storage efficiency while making it easy for customers to browse the selection.

Depending on the store layout, product type, and how you want customers to interact with the merchandise, each design serves a specific purpose.
